Hello natural beauties and scent lovers! I missed a post last week because I’ve been super, dooper, uber busy. I do not extoll the virtues of being busy at all – I’m more about a balance of rest and fun and work. However when you freelance and work for yourself sometimes you just have to accept the jobs and go for it! This week I want to share with you the ever growing realisation that synthetically fragranced products are not good for us. Read on…

I’ve always disliked all air fresheners especially stick fragrance yuck!
In an article from March 7, 2017, Sarah Berry from the Sydney Morning Herald, writes about a study recently released from Melbourne University in regards to the mass of synthetically fragranced products on the market today – “Fragranced products are making us sick”. The study headed by Professor Anne Steinemann, who Sarah says is a world expert on environmental pollutants, addresses how fragranced products including cleaning products, personal care products and air fresheners are literally making us all sick!
Professor Steinemann has also headed a similar study in the USA and is about to release a similar British study too. The Australian study ” Health and effects from exposure to fragranced consumer products” states
“Contrary to popular belief, most exposure to hazardous pollutants that effect health and well-being occurs indoors (Ott et al., 2007; Brown, 2007). A primary source of these indoor pollutants and exposure is common fragranced consumer products such as air fresheners. cleaning products, laundry supplies, and personal care products…
Exposure to fragranced products has been associated with a range of adverse human health effects, including migraine headaches, contact dermatitis, asthma attacks, respiratory difficulties, and mucosal symptoms.”
Some facts from the study:
- 33% of the general population reported one or more types of health problems associated with exposure to one or more types of fragranced products
- 16.7% reported respiratory problems
- 14% mucosal symptoms
- 10% migraine headaches
- 9.5% skin problems
- 7.6% asthma attacks
- 4.5% neurological problems
- 4.1% cognitive problems
- 3% cardiovascular problems
- 2.9% cardiovascular problems
- 1.9% other
Other statements:
- fragranced products emit a range of chemicals, including hazardous air pollutants, but ingredients do not need to be fully disclosed on the product label or material safety data sheet
- a “fragrance” in a product is typically a chemical mixture of several dozen to several hundred chemicals

mmmmmm hideous
I’ve always maintained that getting rid of, or limiting synthetic fragrance is of paramount importance and talk about it in my book “Revelation! Reveal Your Destiny with Essential Oils”.

Revelation! Reveal Your Destiny with Essential Oils
I have author envy with the release of this fabulous new book by Australian author Kate Grenville “The Case Against Fragrance”, where she basically reports becoming sick from her perfumes and has to stop using them for good!
Unfortunately Kate actually thought she was allergic to dating but later realised it was the dastardly spritz of her French perfume that did her in!

The Case Against Fragrance
Kate intensely describes being so overwhelmed by synthetic fragrance in a hotel she was staying in, she had to duct tape the door and lock herself in to block out the intensity of the scent and to try and save herself from debilitating health issues like migraines.
I do realise the essential oils are made up of different chemicals and can also effect people too, however if we all eliminated synthetically fragranced toxic products from our lives not only would our senses become more refined, but we can then use a little essential oil with great health benefits and results.
Perfume is one of the greatest culprits – sorry perfume lovers – hence the need for 100% pure natural botanical perfumes. Let’s get back to nature. Let’s eliminate the scourge of synthetic fragrance from our every day lives.
It will be worth it.
Believe me.
