Who are you?                                     Dr Candace Gabelish

What’s your business name?           Pearl Perfumery

What’s your website?                       http://www.pearlperfumery.com.au

What is your first scent memory?    the sea and Mum’s Arpege

What is your favourite botanical ingredient (right now)?      Boronia

What a divine image! Makes my mouth water

What a divine image! Makes my mouth water

How do you hope your fragrances will make your customers feel?

loved, happy, authentic

Why are botanical ingredients more luxurious than synthetics?

Essential oils have a richness and complexity due to the presence of hundreds of components, which each add something significant to the overall scent. So each oil is like a fragrance in itself with, top, heart and base notes. This complexity is difficult to match with a synthetic.

What is your “go-to” scent in nature to make you smile?

lemon-scented eucalyptus

How do you apply fragrance?

Wrists and décolletage if I’m wearing, backs of hands if I’m creating

How is your business (and your perfumes) different?

My perfumery focuses on the individual. I want my clients to enjoy the whole experience from initial interview to the finished fragrance with unique name presented in a gorgeous hand-blown black glass bottle. My fragrances, including the exclusive ready-to-wear range, are oil-based, distinctive and long lasting. I also make customized fragrances and room sprays for the corporate sector. I feel a strong connection between colour and fragrance and make art inspired scents for exhibitions

What is your favourite scent to gift to your friends?

I like to give my friends gift vouchers for customised scents, the ultimate in luxury.

What is an unusual way you scent your home?

I have developed a range of room sprays so sometimes use a different scent in each room. Splendour in the Bath for the bathroom, Where the Wildflowers Are for the entrance and hallway, Refresh for my teenager’s bedroom.

What inspires you and what inspired you to become a perfumer?

I am inspired by people and their stories. Each customised perfume I have created was inspired by a unique journey, scent memory and taste in fragrance. I read “The Emperor of Scent” by Chandler Burr, the wonderful true story about Luca Turin, world famous scientist and perfume critic. Reading that book rekindled my passion for perfumery and my need to create.

My Jasmine – A Countdown to the Southern Spring ~ Week 5

The jasmine chronicle continues into week 5, after I spotted buds on the vine at the front of my place. I was wrong – which is unusual because I’m usually right 100% of the time (hehehehe). I predicted little flowers this week but was thwarted as we were plunged back into the dead of winter, with cold temperatures and rain. Here is where my potential flowers are at:

A slightly blurry pic, but you can see some of the bigger buds are turning a much lighter pink:

It’s definitely winter rain falling on those little buds:

Come on you little beauties!!!!!!!

Come on little ones!

Come on little ones!

So here we are at the end of another week and nature is in control. I’d like to go out on a limb and predict flowers next week – but my last prediction didn’t end so well. I’m going to say 1 week to 10 days, and I’ll have jasmine flowers. I will be so happy when that time comes.

Spring! Spring! Spring! (That’s my chant).

One week on from the first pics and I can see the plumpness in each potential little flower. The reason I’m so delighted when I see these little buds, is that I really don’t love the winter and when I see the jasmine, I know it’s getting warmer, and closer to summer.

Violet – The Flower and the Scent

I’ve always loved violets. Wild violets, violets on a windowsill, violet ground cover – oh so petite and pretty. When I was bush-walking with my cousin on the weekend I snapped a pretty violet in the wild and it got me remembering ……

pretty wild violet

pretty wild violet

Memories of my childhood, nothing specific really, just a general fondness and lovely feelings come to me when I see a violet. I love the delicacy of the flower, the deep rich colour (symbolising the Crown chakra), and the old-fashioned simplicity of the cute little things. I suppose they remind me of my Great Aunt, and other elders passed. I think I had a violet perfume and it could be this one:

The sweet little perfume Devon Violets

The sweet little perfume Devon Violets

I remember this perfume being almost sickly sweet – I don’t think I even liked it! But what I liked was the colour of the bottle, the purple ribbon, and the idea that this came from violets! Well of course there’s no real violet absolute in here, just synthetic fragrance, but at the time I simply assumed it was real. So I over used the perfume, as most young women do, and as a 10-year-old, thought I was marvellous.

Lovely violet ground cover

Lovely violet ground cover

Fast forward about 20 years, and as I discovered my love for essential oils I came across “violet leaf” absolute. Hardly able to contain my excitement I bought it, only to realise on opening the bottle it was “leaf”, not “petal” or “flower”. This absolute has a place in perfumery, but does not have a solid foundation in aromatherapy. Obtaining a real extract from violets is almost impossible because of the yield ratio – meaning millions of little flowers may yield a tiny amount of absolute, making it hugely expensive. I actually don’t know if anyone makes this, but if they did I probably couldn’t afford it!

As I forge further into botanical perfumery, I hope to add some violet leaf to a new creation – if only for the romantic notion.

My neighbours violets in the rain

My neighbours violets in the rain

I’ve often found describing a scent difficult, so my dear friend Portia Turbo from Australian Perfume Junkies, sums up the tiny violet perfectly:

“Violets are cool, waxy, fresh and crisp to me.

If any flower could simultaneously give the smell of spring and melancholy, I think it’s the humble violet.”

How can I say more?

Do you love violets too?
