Essential Oils and Their Keywords – Part 1

Essential oils tend to be grouped together as to their physical healing properties – but what about the way they treat our spirit and minds too? For example marjoram, lavender and rosemary are great for muscles; rose, geranium and patchouli are wonderful for skin health; fennel and juniper can help relieve joint swelling. Of course essential oils often have more than one quality and the art of aromatherapy allows synergistic combinations to be formulated to expand their individual powers. Read on to discover how I feel about some of my favourite oils.

Body oils make lovely legs

Body oils make lovely legs

As per usual here is my spiel on making a body oil:

Nourishing Body Oil Blend

For a coat of your body use 3 teaspoons of carrier oil in a little dish and, add 7 – 8 drops of essential oil. It’s always best to patch test first, before you apply all over.

***** Always put the drops of essential oil into the bottle or dish first, then add the carrier oil. It gives the scents time to create a synergistic fusion.

For a 50ml bottle of oil add 25 drops and see my articles “Ratios for Blending Essential Oils – A Reminder of the Basics” and “Aromatherapy – It’s Easy as 1 2 3”

Strength, Clarity and Potentiality with Essential Oils

I thought of a friend this morning and I’ll be seeing her in a few days. I decided I’d make a little oil blend for her because I know she has been working really hard in her own business for a few years, and is facing new challenges with it. These three words came to mind STRENGTH, CLARITY AND POTENTIALITY.

Strength

Strength

Strength

What oils will I use to embody this energy?

I always go to lavender for strength and solidarity. Most people attach calm and relaxation to lavender which is right, but when you smell this divine flower and essential oil, it is powerful. It has depth. It contains the energetic imprint of thousands of years in its healing ways. To me it is the embodiment of strength as it can be used to soften and relax, and to contain and bolster you in times of weakness.

Clarity

Clarity

Clarity

Clarity

Ah there’s nothing like a beautiful blue sky to help you attain some clarity in your life. When I think of this I immediately think of basil, and cypress.

Basil is an oil that can open your upper chakras and completely clear your head and your mind with its robust scent.

Cypress is clean and crisp, uplifting heavy emotions and allowing your body to release excess fluids.

Potentiality

Potentiality

Potentiality

Petitgrain is the oil for me! This bitter-sweet citrus is lightening fast in scent and the way it affects your whole being. I use this oil to help me see the unlimited possibilities in any situation. This can be hard when you get bogged down in life and you may feel you have no choice. Limitless expansion = petitgrain.

An oil blend is full of unexpected treasure!

An oil blend is full of unexpected treasure!

Strength, Clarity and Potentiality – The Blend

In a 50ml bottle add these drops of essential oil:

Lavender      8 drops

Cypress        5 drops

Basil             2 drops

Petitgrain    10 drops

Then pour in your carrier oil of choice – sunflower, grape seed, jojoba, almond, argan, rosehip, apricot, olive, macadamia or anything else you love.

Essential oil blends are best when left to mature for a while but don’t let that put you off using it straight away!

10 Recipes with Lime Essential Oil – Citrus aurantifolia

Beautiful lime oil is an interesting citrus oil with depth and even a little spice. What is lime’s secret?

Lime oil has more depth than the other citrus oils

Lime oil has more depth than the other citrus oils

“Lime (Citrus aurantifolia)

counteracts negative thinking

Lime is better used in diffuser and mists rather than on the body. Lime is one of the heavier citrus oils and I feel it hides a deep, magical secret, but I’m not quite sure what that secret is. It has less classical uses than lemon but when I use this oil on my clients I can see its ability to influence and counter-act negative thinking. Don’t give away your energy to negative thoughts, feelings or situations otherwise you wont have anything left for your own happiness. Use lime instead.”

Beer and lime!

Beer and lime!

So while beer with a wedge of lime is lovely, what can lime oil be used for?

* According to Salvatore Battaglia (who has written a great text-book on essential oils “The Complete guide to Aromatherapy), lime is great for sore throats due to its anti-microbial nature. However, all oils have anti bacterial qualities as they are the protectors of each plant they come from.

* Lime is used to help with depression – as with all the citrus oils. They are oils of happiness.

* It could be used in a body oil blend as a digestive tonic

* In a mild dilution it can help oily skin and hair as it acts as an astringent.

Beautiful rose in Wellington Botanic Gardens

“Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose.

Gertrude Stein
Rose essential oil is sometimes referred to as Attar of Rose or Rose Otto. It is steam distilled and the most expensive way to buy rose oil. Many other rose oils are actually “absolutes”, which refers to the way in which the scented oil has been extracted. This method is not very natural, often with chemicals used to extract the scented essence.
I’m hoping that one day soon we will start to see more CO2 extracts of rose available, which are more environmentally friendly (even though it doesn’t sound like it), and actually extracts more of the plant or flower than steam distillation does. Check out my article “What are CO2 Extracts in the World of Aromatherapy?” for more info.
Back to the rose. I have written a couple of articles about roses before and you can check them out at your leisure:
On to some recipes.
I will give you some recipes using 3% rose oil and some using pure rose oil. Rose oil is mostly sold already mixed in a 3% ratio with jojoba mainly because of the cost. See my article for more info on 3% blends in jojoba.

A jasmine blossom in Sydney – pic by me

Jasmine essential oil is stunning. I’m not sure how else to describe its heavenly scent. Jasmine is a sweet little flower with an almighty punch when it is converted into an oil – sweet and heady, syrupy and luscious. I recommend you always have a little bottle of this oil with you to open your energy to the feminine mystique within you.

Why do I say 3%? Jasmine is an expensive oil (yes you can buy it as a 100% pure essential oil), so it is more commonly found already diluted into a 3% ratio in jojoba oil. Aromatherapists usually work on a 2.5% ratio when blending so 3% essential oils are ready to use on your skin. For more info see my article “Essential Oils 3% in Jojoba – What are they, and Why?”.

2015! The Universal Number of 8!

2015! The Universal Number of 8!

number 8

Last year I wrote about the number 7 in regards to the numerology of 2014 – The Universal Number of 7!   In this article I wrote about meeting a numerologist and apart from being totally wonderful and charming, she was very insistent I write about the number 7. So following on from that meeting lets see what’s in store for us next year.

In numerology the number 8 represents where we are in our journey, through the cycle of 1 to 9. So with 2015, equaling 8, we are almost at the end of the cycle.

I’ve always associated the number 8 with abundance and money, but the more I read about it the more I realise these are simplifications. There are many kinds of numerology out there and just as many interpretations, so what I can gather about the number 8 and our year in 2015 is:

* 8 is as much about karmic balance and the Law of Cause and effect than it is about money

* the energy of the infinity sign gives us strength and allows us to express our leadership qualities

* we are confident and fair to others

* we can access our personal power (without too much ego) which can not only help others but can also help us reap the benefits of the past 7 years of hard work

* we may have more abundance and money in our lives but it is less important to us than before

* the number 8 is about balance and a greater expression of money vs abundance

* if we are truly living up to the number 8 we can feel and express the need to help those around us

Infinity - also called the Holy Lemniscate

The 12 Days of Christmas – Essential Oil Recipes for Your Home Part 1 – Unashamedly a Re-Blog From Last Year!

The 12 Days of Christmas folk song - pic via wikipedia.org

The 12 Days of Christmas folk song – pic via wikipedia.org

Thought to be of French and English origin this little ditty is called a cumulative song where we build a verse on top of another verse. Its origins lay in France but it was popularised in England in the 1700’s. There is all sorts of information attached to where the lyrics came from and they are all very different but what I know is that even though I might not remember all the 12 gifts my true love gave to me, I sure do know “a partridge in a pear tree”. There also seems to be a lot game birds in this song too but I’m a vegetarian …..

I’ve taken each verse and created an oil blend for you to scent your home. To scent you own space I recommend 25 drops of essential oil, and you can use a traditional oil burner with a candle, an electric vapouriser, or for a quick and easy result put 25 drops of oil into a bowl and pour boiling water over it and leave it to stand – instant aromatherapy!

I have kept the essential oil associations minimal so as not to over-complicate things; but remember when you use your intention with any essential oils and combinations, they can be used for anything you desire.

By infusing your own energy into your oils and your formulations, you are creating your health, and your future so please be mindful when you’re in your scented zone!

Happy blending and remember to use your intention when you are creating your formulas. See my article about intention.
