Pruning Lavender at Paradise Botanical Garden

Video

Hello natural beauties how are you? I’ve been a bit slack with my posts but I am caring for my elderly parents and that takes up a lot of time. I was happy to escape to Paradise Botanical Garden last week to get some fresh air and help the garden. My job was cutting the lavender and it was a joyous, and cold morning. Avoiding the bees was my biggest challenge.

Moving Into Spring – The Southern Hemisphere

Ah yes the promise of spring is in the air! And my skin is looking dry and scaly from covering up all winter, having hot showers and being in heated environments. Here are a few recipes to bring yourself back to life:

**** Spring Body Oil

.For a coat of your body use 3 teaspoons of carrier oil in a little dish and, add 7 – 8 drops of essential oil. It’s always best to patch test first, before you apply all over.

** Always put the drops of essential oil into the bottle or dish first, then add the carrier oil. It gives the scents time to create a synergistic fusion.

For a 50ml bottle of oil add 25 drops and see my articles “Ratios for Blending Essential Oils – A Reminder of the Basics” and  “Aromatherapy – It’s Easy as 1 2 3”

After a good skin scrub with a body puff or your favourite scrub, lather yourself in this “Spring Has Sprung” blend:

Orange          4 drops

Rosemary      2 drops

Peru Balsam   3 drops

**** Spring Clay Face Mask

I Usually add 1 or 2 drops of oil to 2 teaspoons of clay, and add water, floral water or hydrosol. Keep the mask on for 5 minutes then rinse off with cool water. Mist with a hydrosol or floral water and moisturise.

Moving Into Autumn – The Northern Hemisphere

Moving into Autumn you may still be quite warm with late summer lingering on. Time to hydrate and moisturise your skin after the sun.

**** Autumn Body Oil

.For a coat of your body use 3 teaspoons of carrier oil in a little dish and, add 7 – 8 drops of essential oil.

Try a long soak in a warm bath then lavish this blend all over yourself:

Lavender      2 drops

Geranium     2 drops

Mandarin     4 drops

**** Autumn Face Hydration

Facial Oil Treatment

Mix one or two drops of essential oil in one teaspoon of carrier oil. You can warm the oil slightly first if desired – it will be very relaxing! Massage your face and rest for 10 minutes. You can also place a cool or warm wet facecloth on your face as a compress over the oil mask. Remove excess oil with a tissue or cloth if necessary.

Soak in a bath

I don’t often recommend adding too many essential oils to a bath as they are difficult to disperse and can cause minor skin irritations when combined with the heat of the water. If you do like to use them in a bath, try 4 -6 drops in total and add the drops to another medium like sea salt, coconut milk, other milks or a water dispersible agent.

Add a few rose petals too:

10 Recipes with Cedarwood Atlas – Cedrus atlantica

The cedarwoods are very useful oils in Aromatherapy. As a base to anchor an oil blend or perfume, they also speak to our spiritual nature by opening us to higher frequencies, and the dynamic existence of the universe. This cedarwood hails from the Atlas mountains in Morocco and is the nearest in location to the cedars of Lebanon mentioned in spiritual texts.

Cedrus atlantica needles

Cedrus atlantica needles

In aromatherapy this cedarwood oil is used:

  • help reduce the symptoms of skin irritations and dermatitis
  • help stimulate the scalp where hair loss is an issue
  • to act as a mild aphrodisiac and is often used in products for men for this reason and of course due to its scent

I use this oil as an oil of abundance – to see abundance in all things. It is wonderful for strengthening resolve and fear. Let’s check out some recipes:

3. Put A few Drops Of Oil into the bottom of the Shower

This works in a similar way to just taking a whiff straight from the bottle, but if you’ve got an extra minute, it will give you a completely different experience. Your whole body will be immersed in an essential oil steam. Just cover the drain with a cloth or your foot for a couple of minutes and breathe in the medicinal goodness.

Cedarwood will help you counteract nerves on a big day, help you move from fear to abundance and allow your upper chakras to open.

Beautiful rose in Wellington Botanic Gardens

Beautiful rose in Wellington Botanic Gardens

“Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose.

Gertrude Stein
Rose essential oil is sometimes referred to as Attar of Rose or Rose Otto. It is steam distilled and the most expensive way to buy rose oil. Many other rose oils are actually “absolutes”, which refers to the way in which the scented oil has been extracted. This method is not very natural, often with chemicals used to extract the scented essence.
I’m hoping that one day soon we will start to see more CO2 extracts of rose available, which are more environmentally friendly (even though it doesn’t sound like it), and actually extracts more of the plant or flower than steam distillation does. Check out my article “What are CO2 Extracts in the World of Aromatherapy?” for more info.
Back to the rose. I have written a couple of articles about roses before and you can check them out at your leisure:
On to some recipes.
I will give you some recipes using 3% rose oil and some using pure rose oil. Rose oil is mostly sold already mixed in a 3% ratio with jojoba mainly because of the cost. See my article for more info on 3% blends in jojoba.

3. Nourishing Body Oil Blend

For a coat of your body use 3 teaspoons of carrier oil in a little dish and, add 7 – 8 drops of essential oil. It’s always best to patch test first, before you apply all over.

***** Always put the drops of essential oil into the bottle or dish first, then add the carrier oil. It gives the scents time to create a synergistic fusion.

For a 50ml bottle of oil add 25 drops and see my articles “Ratios for Blending Essential Oils – A Reminder of the Basics” and “Aromatherapy – It’s Easy as 1 2 3”

*All with 3% rose oil so the ratios from my standards above, will differ slightly

4. Personal Aura Cleansing Mist & Room Mist

In a 50ml mist bottle filled with water add 25 drops of oil

(depending on the packaging you have, you may need to use a little alcohol -like vodka- at the bottom of your bottle first, so the oils disperse into smaller drops to prevent clogging the atomiser top. I’ve found sometimes it works just with water, and sometimes it doesn’t – very annoying!)

*All using pure rose oil

10 Recipes with Petitgrain Essential Oil – Citrus aurantium v amara

The leaves and twigs ready to be distilled into petitgrain oil

Ah beautiful, fresh petitgrain. This is one of my favourite oils along with neroli. They are produced from the same tree, but petitgrain comes from the leaves and twigs of the bitter citrus tree, whereas neroli is made from the gentle blossoms.

In my book “Revelation! Reveal Your Destiny with Essential Oils”,  I classify petitgrain as an oil of happiness with the keyword “potentiality”. It has a green citrus and almost spicy scent but is also fresh and clean. It is one of the scents in Eau de Cologne and is used in Aromatherapy as an oil to counteract depression and anxiety.

Here are some recipes:

3. Skin Scrub

Use a cup of fine sea salt, add some unperformed lotion, or some carrier oil, mix into a paste and then add your essential oils (about 5 drops, or a few more). You’re ready to scrub under the shower or in the bath, but remember to be gentle! If you use the scrub while standing in the bath you can then soak in the salt and oils too. When you shower scrub most of it gets wasted.
