A Bouquet of Scent

Video

Hello natural beauties! Do you ever wonder if a particular essential oil will blend with another essential oil? I feel you’re already really great at creating essential oil blends, because you’ve picked up so much information and hints and tips along the way.  However, here’s a little video I did to show you how to create a bouquet of scent … and as I type the word “bouquet” a few times I realise what a quaint old-fashioned word it is. I’m reclaiming it as cool!

When a perfumer creates a perfume she will use scent strips to create her bouquet. But as you may not have them, use my little method to try out your blend as you are in the midst of creating. Here’s a pic from a perfume workshop I recently led. The attendees have their scent strips to put together in a type of bouquet. Then they can decide what combinations they like.

So if you don’t have these scent strips just grab all your bottles and waft away …

Ylang Ylang – A Three Word Buzz

Natural scent lovers from far and wide I salute you! Do love love the heady fragrance of Ylang Ylang or is it a bit too strong for you? As a deep oriental floral, it is very basey in its fragrance and because of this I find my male friends quite like it too. I think it’s one of those essential oils that is polarising so I’d love to know your thoughts.

The Ylang Ylang flower, Cananga odorata is spidery in appearance and its vibrant yellow colour also resonates with the Solar plexus chakra. In classical aromatherapy it can be used in skincare, may help to relieve tension and anxiety and can create a sensual feminine mood.

There’s one thing for sure, this oil has a distinct and powerful scent, and here are some Australian perfumers and “noses” to give you their 3 word buzz on this unique oil.

Oils to Stimulate Your Mind and Inspire Remembering

Hello natural beauties I hope you’re all well and happy. I completely forgot to write an article last week as I’ve been doing lots of different things and have been staying at a friend’s place looking after her cat. It dawned on me one day “hmmm, I forgot to blog”. So I think my mind needs stimulation and I definitely need to remember a bit better. So here are some oils to stimulate your brain, get you thinking and clarify your thoughts.

remember with rosemary

Rosemary

Sharp and strong, the scent of rosemary essential oil will awaken and stimulate your brain. Rosemary is the classic oil for remembering. Remember that! I’ve made my mum “smelling salts” and the main ingredient is rosemary. Just open a bottle and have a whiff!

If you can’t wake up in the morning, put a few drops in the bottom of the shower and have a whole body steam.

If you need to concentrate, study, focus and remember things, diffuse rosemary throughout your house or office – or just put a few drops on a hanky or make-up remover pad and sniff when you need as boost.

This ancient herb oil has been with us for centuries which proves it’s hardiness and usefulness, even in today’s modern society. It’s inexpensive too, easy to find, and easy to grow if you have a bit of sun. For some recipes check out

10 Recipes with Rosemary Essential Oil – Rosmarinus officianalis

Eucalyptus

Awaken, clean out your mind and get going with eucalyptus oil. This very distinctive scent will give you an instant brain-lift and help you put ideas into action. It is the oil of clearing and cleansing, so clean out the cupboards of your mind and make space for the thoughts that really count. Once again this oil is inexpensive and easy to find, and works well when cleaning the actual cupboards in your house. Have an aromatherapy treatment while you clean by adding a few drops to soapy water. Simple and easy. Check out these recipes:

and also a recent article from Australian perfumers about their thoughts on eucalyptus oil:

Eucalyptus – A Three Word Buzz

Black pepper

Black Pepper

From a story I wrote about black pepper for Australian Perfume Junkies:

“The essential oil of black pepper is a lot softer and sweeter than the taste, and is used in Aromatherapy for symptoms such as poor circulation, muscle and joint aches and pains, as treatment for bad digestion and as a general warming tonic. It has been used as an aphrodisiac, and an anti-dote to depression. Taking in all these properties, what can the divine scent tell us? Like many spice oils, it carries the energetic resonance of the evolution of humanity – really. Each drop, each whiff can link us to the past.

It’s an oil of warmth, expansion and action. It’s a stimulating scent to the brain and can certainly be employed to open your mind. When I smell black pepper straight from the bottle (the best way to experience an essential oil is to take off the lid and take a huge sniff) I am inspired to carry on. To me it’s an oil of searching for your purpose in life, and giving inspiration to go forward and seize the day.”

The stunning basil leaf makes a wonderful essential oil – pic by me

Basil

Refreshing and uplifting, the scent of basil can be quite soft as well as pungent. Often described in aromatherapy terms as “cephalic” (pertaining to the head), it is an expansive oil as it works on your mind and your brain.

What’s the diff between your mind and your brain? The brain is the organ which helps run the body performing amazing functions at a very small level. “The mind is the brain in action” says Dr Joe Dispenza the wonderful neuroscientist. The mind is multi-dimensional and allows us to understand, comprehend and evolve.

Have a whiff of basil to open yourself to the intelligence of the universe, and help you wake up to do your everyday work and chores. Check out these recipes:

(and BTW I wrote these two articles close together a while back, because I’d written one and forgotten about it ….. I think I see a pattern emerging …..)

A classic Australian native – wattle – spotted in the park yesterday

From Winter into Spring

You may be experiencing dry, flaky skin from being covered up all winter. Hot showers and indoor heating add extra dryness and you could even seem to have crocodile skin too! Especially on your legs.

Prepare your skin properly before smothering it in an oil blend. This could include

  1. dry brushing – which is fantastic for your skin and circulation too. Check out my article To Dry Brush or Not?
  2. skin scrub in the shower or bath made from natural ingredients like coffee, ground nuts and seeds and some oil
  3. body puff – rather than a loofah – see my article To Loofah or To Body Puff?
  4. have a shower to rid yourself of any skin floating around and get ready to oil up baby!

Nourishing Body Oil Blend

For a coat of your body use 3 teaspoons of carrier oil in a little dish and, add 7 – 8 drops of essential oil. It’s always best to patch test first, before you apply all over.

***** Always put the drops of essential oil into the bottle or dish first, then add the carrier oil. It gives the scents time to create a synergistic fusion.

For a 50ml bottle of oil add 25 drops and see my articles “Ratios for Blending Essential Oils – A Reminder of the Basics” and  “Aromatherapy – It’s Easy as 1 2 3”

From Summer into Autumn

Have you had a lot of sun this summer? Even if you don’t go to the beach or spend time outdoors, and even if you wear sunscreen on your face, your skin is still living in a warmer environment and will need a different type of care.

Be gentle with your skin, especially on your face and prepare your self with a very gentle body and face scrub made from natural ingredients, shower off and smother yourself in a beautiful oil blend you have made especially for you!

Eucalyptus – A Three Word Buzz

Video

Hello natural beauties from far and wide. Eucalyptus is one of the more widely known essential oils, and is grown on many continents. China is one of the world’s biggest producers of eucalyptus oil and the European Economic Community are the largest importers of the oil. The Australian industry was the first to bring this stunning oil out into the world in the early to mid 1900’s and since then has continued, not only with oil production, but also the creation of many eucalyptus oil products.

There’s one thing for sure, eucalyptus oil has a distinct and powerful scent, and here are some Australian perfumers and “noses” to give you their 3 word buzz on this unique oil.

The Rose Family by Robert Frost

The rose is a rose,
And was always a rose.
But the theory now goes
That the apple’s a rose,
And the pear is, and so’s
The plum, I suppose.
The dear only know
What will next prove a rose.
You, of course, are a rose–
But were always a rose.

The Grave and The Rose by Victor Hugo

The Grave said to the Rose,
“What of the dews of dawn,
Love’s flower, what end is theirs?”
“And what of spirits flown,
The souls whereon doth close
The tomb’s mouth unawares?”
The Rose said to the Grave.

The Rose said, “In the shade
From the dawn’s tears is made
A perfume faint and strange,
Amber and honey sweet.”
“And all the spirits fleet
Do suffer a sky-change,
More strangely than the dew,
To God’s own angels new,”
The Grave said to the Rose.

A Red, Red Rose by Robert Burns

O my Luve’s like a red, red rose
That’s newly sprung in June;
O my Luve’s like the melodie
That’s sweetly played in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a’ the seas gang dry:

Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi’ the sun;
I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o’ life shall run.

And fare thee weel, my only Luve,
And fare thee weel awhile!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho’ it ware ten thousand mile.

Nobody knows this little Rose by Emily Dickinson

Nobody knows this little Rose —
It might a pilgrim be
Did I not take it from the ways
And lift it up to thee.
Only a Bee will miss it —
Only a Butterfly,
Hastening from far journey —
On its breast to lie —
Only a Bird will wonder —
Only a Breeze will sigh —
Ah Little Rose — how easy
For such as thee to die!

Stanzas to the Rose by Mary Darby Robinson

SWEET PICTURE of Life’s chequer’d hour!
Ah, wherefore droop thy blushing head?
Tell me, oh tell me, hap’less flow’r,
Is it because thy charms are fled?
Come, gentle ROSE, and learn from me
A lesson of Philosophy.

Thy scented buds, LIFE’S joys disclose;
They strew our paths with magic sweets;
Where many a thorn like thine, fair ROSE,
Full oft the weary wand’rer meets;
And when he sees thy charms depart,
He feels thy thorn within his heart.

When Morn’s bright torch illum’d the sky,
Vainly thy flaunting buds display’d
Enamell’d leaves of crimson die,
Ill-fated blossoms doom’d to fade;
So ’tis with BEAUTY, hapless flow’r,
Its lustre blooms but for an hour.

Come blushing ROSE, and on my breast
Recline thy gentle head, and die;
Thy scatter’d leaves shall there be press’d,
Bath’d with a tear from PITY’S eye;
There shall thy balmy sweets impart
An essence grateful to my heart.

Thus SYMPATHY, with lenient pow’r,
Shall bid thy fading charms bestow
Soft odours for life’s happy hour,
Kind, healing balsam for its woe!
If such thy virtues, ROSE DIVINE!
OH ! MAY THY ENVIED FATE BE MINE

Immortality – A New Botanical Perfume by banks botanicals

Hello natural beauties!. What does the Fountain of Youth mean to you? It’s time to introduce the next botanical perfume, immortality, from my perfume range called REVELATION. The 10 all-natural organic botanical perfumes correspond with my book of the same name. Each perfume represents a “Revelation Formula” from one of the ten chapters on essential oils. From the Fountain of Youth chapter in my book, I have created immortality the botanical perfume.

immortality 9ml roll-on bottle

“There is a fountain of youth: it is in your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life, and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age.”

Sophia Loren, Actress

To embrace the Fountain of Youth, a legend present in many cultures, It’s not just about anti-ageing creams, botox and facelifts. It’s about a multi-dimensional approach to life which includes;

The physical aspects – eating well, being vibrant and healthy, maybe exercising, using great skin care (aromatherapy based of course), and minimising the use of chemicals in your life. This means getting rid of all the yucky cleaning chemicals as well as synthetic perfumes and synthetic fragrance in washing products too.

The mental aspects – release stress through techniques such as meditation and yoga, helping others, positive self-talk and using essential oils.

The spiritual aspects – learn to look past the wrinkles in the mirror to the oneness that connects us all. By using essential oils you will be able to improve your intuition and come to rely on it more, resulting in a more holistic approach to life.

Or just use this beautiful perfume I have created ….

“Molecules dissolve and pass away, but consciousness survives the death of the matter on which it rides.”

Deepak Chopra

From the Affirmations and Positive Self-Talk chapter in my book, I have created positivity the botanical perfume.

positivity 9ml roll-on bottle

“An affirmation opens the door. It’s a beginning point on the path to change.”

Louise L. Hay

Positive affirmations almost seem out-dated, but for someone in a bad mental or emotional space they can help to shift focus. And sometimes that’s all that is required and all that can be mustered up.

Affirmations simply help you point yourself in the right direction of where you would like to be. It is very important when using these simple linguistic tools, that you conjure your energy and emotions to meet the affirmation so you can project an wholistic state to the universe.

Using essential oils along with your affirmations can amplify them to the next level and help you feel a bit more special and happier along the way. And being kind to yourself is sooooo important and something we often forget to do.

So why not use this modern perfume to take you to a positive space?

“We are often our hardest critics, so loving and accepting yourself, and speaking to yourself with kindness and love is extremely important.”

Suzanne R Banks   “Revelation! Reveal Your Destiny with Essential Oils”

positivity 1ml sample

The positivity formula combines happiness oils and some of the essential oils I have listed in the Affirmations and Positive Self-Talk chapter of my book. All my perfumes are hand-made, organic, vegan, jojoba oil based.

positivity is a green, sappy, delicious fresh scent with basil leading the way. Supporting basil’s cool positivity are tangs of lemon and lemongrass, highlights of rich feminine geranium, the cedars of two continents and a secret, soft, barely there, warmth of liquorice.

Be kind to yourself and exude positive vibes.

Ingredients: essential oils of *lemon, *basil, *geranium, *mandarin, *fennel, *lemongrass, *cedarwood Atlas and cedarwood Virginian in  *jojoba. *certified organic

“If you ask what is the single most important key to longevity, I would have to say it is avoiding worry, stress and tension. And if you didn’t ask me, I’d still say it.”

George Burns, Actor, Writer

Stress seems to be a popular state of being – particularly in the western world. Sometimes people live under constant pressure and stress and become so used to it that they assume this state is normal. It becomes chronic. Ongoing stress isn’t paid much attention until a negative situation arises,  like health disorder is diagnosed and someone is forced to change their life – and often all too late.

Using essential oils can help relieve stress in seconds by simply opening a bottle and having a whiff – a change of focus in seconds!

Flowing with life in all its good and bad incarnations can help us become more malleable and less resistant. Resisting your troubles and fighting against bad things can maker it all a lot worse.

Don’t resist – just flow!

“Seek not that the things which happen should happen as you wish; but wish the things which happen to be as they are, and you will have a tranquil flow of life”

Epictetus, Greek Philosopher
