Using Essential Oils in the Time of Covid 19

Hello natural beauties! Keep calm and use essential oils. If you are an essential oil enthusiast I know you’ll be making your own anti-bacterial concoctions. And the words to note here are ANTI-BACTERIAL and Corona VIRUS. Some essential oils have been shown to exhibit antiviral activity, but so far we can’t say for certain that any oil will stop you from getting the virus. In fact, we cant say that at all. But by using essential oils for cleaning surfaces and hands, we MAY help limit our exposure to the virus and reduce exposure to other bacteria too.

Dried lemon myrtle leaves – pic via http://www.abc.net.au

I’ve started making a re-usable hand wipe with essential oils and carrying it with me in my bag. I make a new one every couple of days, using different essential oils, and put the old one in the wash. This doesn’t have alcohol in it so I can’t say it has complete anti-bacterial capabilities, however, it’s the first line of defense and soft on your hands. And why not use essential oils if you have them? It’s definitely better than nothing.

Check out my little video:

A quick, easy, reusable and portable first line of defense for your hands on the go

What essential oils will be best to use? I love lemon myrtle best of all for an antiviral oil along with lemon-scented tea tree. I’d also go with thyme and oregano as antibacterial and include lavender and eucalyptus and tea tree – just for starters. Myrrh as well.

Which oils do some high profile aromatherapy experts recommend as having anti-viral activity?

Salvatore Battaglia recommends these oils:

clove, hyssop, manuka, patchouli, thyme, marjoram, peppermint, oregano, eucalyptus, tea tree, myrtle, sandalwood, rose and a few more too!

Patchouli leaf – pic via toptropicals.com

Dr E. Joy Bowles: gives some advice from March 12, 2020:

“So people are clamoring for a natural preventative for the new virus… Best of all is to do all the health-building activities you know about already: EAT HEALTHY, SLEEP ENOUGH, EXERCISE EVERY DAY, DE-STRESS… And really DO…

We don’t know which essential oils kill this new virus… It’s too new. By all means be a test subject for your own experiments, but please, keep a record of what you do and the results… Could be helpful later…”

Thyme is not vulgar! Hehe

Farida Irani notes these oils: lime, clove,

Dr Penoel refers to monoterpenols as having antiviral effects: lavender, melissa, peppermint, basil, oregano, marjoram, sage, clary sage, and thyme among others.

Patricia Davis says: bergamot, eucalyptus and tea tree.

Sylla Sheppard-Hanger lists quite a few and here’s some for you: rosewood, cinnamon, myrrh, palmarosa, eucalyptus, melissa, helichrysum, eucalyptus, lemon, thyme, hyssop, ravensara, niaouli…

I used patchouli, lemon scented eucalyptus, myrtle and oregano in my surface and hand sanitiser

I also made my own surface and hand sanitiser with perfume grade alcohol and oregano, lemon eucalyptus, patchouli and myrtle (I ran out of lemon myrtle). I used 26 drops in 50mls, but 20 drops would be enough. Be careful when using alcohol on your hands for extended periods of time because it will really dry them out. A great base to use is aloe vera gel – but it can be a bit sticky and does not contain alcohol, therefore much less effective and is not great for surfaces! It’s more like a hand softener and conditioner if you’ve been using drying and harsh hand sanitisers. See pic above.

I hope you take this all on board and use these beautiful gifts from nature, to help your immunity and help everyone at the same time. May The Force be with you and wash your hands.

About the Dog Year

The dog is the 11th zodiac animal out of 12 so we are in the autumn stages of the cycle. To be specific this year is the year of the Brown Earth (Mountain) Dog. Next year we move into the first water sign, but for now, this is a year to look after your friends and family. Stay true and loyal to those around you, and try your best to embrace empathy and togetherness with your brothers and sisters around the world.

This is not a year to be selfish and put yourself above others, if you do it will backfire and you will not have flow and harmony in your life. This year is a good time to pay attention to your health, and you may even feel inclined to have a more conservative approach in your everyday life. The dog year is very oriented to work, and everything around it. Learning new skills and working with others are big themes this year.

This is a year of solidarity!

A classic Australian native – wattle – spotted in the park yesterday

From Winter into Spring

You may be experiencing dry, flaky skin from being covered up all winter. Hot showers and indoor heating add extra dryness and you could even seem to have crocodile skin too! Especially on your legs.

Prepare your skin properly before smothering it in an oil blend. This could include

  1. dry brushing – which is fantastic for your skin and circulation too. Check out my article To Dry Brush or Not?
  2. skin scrub in the shower or bath made from natural ingredients like coffee, ground nuts and seeds and some oil
  3. body puff – rather than a loofah – see my article To Loofah or To Body Puff?
  4. have a shower to rid yourself of any skin floating around and get ready to oil up baby!

The Wonders of Wintergreen

Thanks for tuning in again natural beauties. This week a client and friend brought me a gift from the USA – Wintergreen Life Savers. She had promised she would bring some back to me so I could have a taste – and had been inspired to do this after I used wintergreen in an oil blend for one of her treatments. She said that this lolly was a blast from the past and a loved candy from her childhood.

As you can see from the comment in my pic above – wintergreen as a flavouring for a candy is very unusual for me (and I would think many Aussies too). To me it’s like eating a sports rub like Deep Heat or Dencorub. It is commonly used as a flavouring in America, but I’m not sure if it’s embraced the same way in other parts of the world. After the initial blast and sensation of the essential oil of wintergreen in my mouth, the fragrance subsided into a general sweetness. Phew.

Some of my classic aromatherapy text books warn against using this oil at all, which seems strange when you can eat it in a lolly )this is however, at an extremely low dosage). Wintergreen is an essential oil of warmth, expansion and healing and can be used in an external oil blend for:

  • sore muscles
  • a chest cough
  • a headache
  • tension
  • poor circulation

I think the reason this oil is misunderstood is that some texts say it is high in the same chemical constituents that are in aspirin – but that’s not quite true. It has a high concentration of methyl salicylate ……

“Methyl salicylate is good for some people, not for others. A blanket contraindication is not necessary, but it is best avoided in pregnancy – all salicylates are teratogenic in sufficient amount, including methyl salicylate and aspirin (acetyl salicylic acid). Methyl salicylate must be absolutely avoided by anyone taking blood-thinning drugs, as it increases the action of the drug, and this causes blood to leak into tissues and  internal bruising occurs.

Wintergreen oil has some wonderful properties, but I would not like to see it used at more than 5%.”

Robert Tisserand

wintergreen - Gaultheria procumbens

wintergreen – Gaultheria procumbens

NB: As Robert Tisserand says above, he would not recommend using this at a higher concentration then 5%. Well 5% is a very high concentration in aromatherapy as mostly our oil blends are a standard 2.5%.

I have used this oil with an elderly client who is on blood thinners and it really helps him with back pain. I don’t use it all the time and when I do make a blend I always add other oils too.

Common sense and intuition must always play a part when you use essential oils. One size does not fit all.

Here are a few recipes for an oil blend at 2.5%

For a coat of your body use 3 teaspoons of carrier oil in a little dish and, add 7 – 8 drops of essential oil. It’s always best to patch test first, before you apply all over.

***** Always put the drops of essential oil into the bottle or dish first, then add the carrier oil. It gives the scents time to create a synergistic fusion.

  • Used as a calming oil you can see how this relates to stress, sleep, healing skin and soothing skin too.
  • Mix a few drops of lavender oil into some natural aloe vera gel for the perfect after-sun treatment (although it can be a bit sticky)
  • Add a few drops of this amazing oil into your favourite body or face moisturiser to help soothe and repair sun damaged skin

WINTER

Warm up in winter with essential oils

Warm up in winter with essential oils

While lavender is wonderful for soothing and calming summer skin how can it help you in winter?

  • Lavender is an ancient healing herb oil that has strength and tenacity which is what one often needs to brave the winter months
  • Your skin can become very dry due to many reasons – artificial heating, hot showers and baths and by being continually covered up the dead skin cells often don’t have anywhere to escape to, leaving you dry and flaky
  • Lavender is the perfect oil to nurture you in the cold by doing steam inhalations to bring colour and life into your face – even add a few drops to your shower to give you an all over steam inhalation
  • Add a few drops to a hot foot bath to increase circulation
  • And as above: add a few drops of this amazing oil into your favourite body or face moisturiser to help soothe and repair dry skin
  • Make a body oil blend with lavender and your favourite cold pressed oil using the ratio above:

Essential Oils and their Keywords – Part 3

Essential oils tend to be grouped together as to their physical healing properties – but what about the way they treat our spirit and minds too? For example marjoram, lavender and rosemary are great for muscles; rose, geranium and patchouli are wonderful for skin health; fennel and juniper can help relieve joint swelling. Of course essential oils often have more than one quality and the art of aromatherapy allows synergistic combinations to be formulated to expand their individual powers. Read on to discover how I feel about some of my favourite oils.

Jasmine in Sydney

Jasmine in Sydney

And if you’re in summer it’s probably peaking right now and you’re feeling warm and lovely and happy. There’s nothing like late summer on a beach in Mexico, or in a park in Europe savouring the long lingering summer light. I’m envious of all of you northerners right now.

Remember for us, everything happens in summer. Well there’s summer for starters, Christmas, New Year, Chinese New Year and finishing of with Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

Then it’s winter.

Just winter.

So you’ll understand my excitement when I see the jasmine getting read to bloom.

Mid to Late Summer Essential Oils

Lavender

If you’ve had a bit of sun over the past couple of months lavender will help your skin heal and regenerate. The perfect after sun oil, lavender is also the perfect first aid kit in a bottle. Make sure you dilute it in the right proportions before you coat your body with this grounding, centering and calming oil.

Palmarosa

This mildly rose scented grass (like lemongrass) is great for skin renewal too, and allows you to be flexible and flowing in your attitudes. If you haven’t already warmed up this summer, palmarosa with help your mind unwind and open up to new adventures – there’s still plenty more spontaneity to be had this summer.

Peppermint

Lovely peppermint is a cooling oil, but take care if you are using it on your body as it can be sensitising. The best way to cool down with peppermint is to put a few drops into the shower and let the beautiful aroma surround and cool you. Breathe in deeply and enjoy your scented summer.

10 Recipes with Ginger Essential Oil – Zingiber officinale

10 Recipes with Ginger Essential Oil – Zingiber officinale

Beautiful ginger

Beautiful ginger

To me ginger essential oil is an oil that doesn’t necessarily smell how you think it will – especially if you have eaten eat before, or drunk tea with fresh ginger in it. Like black pepper essential oil, ginger is a spice oil that is a lot more gentle that the plant itself. It is soft and warming, slightly reminiscent of rosemary, with a spicy undertone that can take a few seconds to vapourise.

I’m writing about ginger today because yesterday I had my regular aromatherapy treatment and I was given ginger, orange and, um …. something else (I can’t remember now), and it was gorgeous!

In aromatherapy ginger essential oil is used:

* externally on the stomach for nausea

* as a general warming tonic

* to increase circulation to the extremities (important with people who have diabetes)

I use ginger oil metaphysically to help clients or friends (or myself), particularly when the emotions are stuck and a cold. Ginger is a great way to soften your emotions ans help you to become more approachable in your relationships, and may even help with finding your true purpose in life.

Here are some recipes:

1. Put A few Drops Of Oil into the bottom of the Shower

This works in a similar way to just taking a whiff straight from the bottle, but if you’ve got an extra minute, it will give you a completely different experience. Your whole body will be immersed in an essential oil steam. Just cover the drain with a cloth or your foot for a couple of minutes and breathe in the medicinal goodness

Do Gay People Have a Favourite Essential Oil? (Last Week on YouTube)

???????

???????

I recently accompanied my very good friend DJ Wayne G on an Atlantis Cruise from Auckland to Sydney. These cruises are predominantly gay men, a few lesbians, a straight couple or two and a few straight girls. When a blog reader asked “what is gay peoples’ favourite essential oil” I laughed out loud (really). What a perfect place to ask a few people this interesting question.

Of course I imagined I would ask 500 people, like a vox pop, and ended up actually having a holiday and asking 5 people! Here is the result.

There is one clip with (another DJ) friend of mine Shigeki, filmed on a train. Clearly NOT a ship. This was shot on a beautiful wooden train that took us up through the Taieri Gorge from Dunedin in New Zealand – a beautiful day through spectacular scenery.

Thanks so much for your continued support and please let me know if there is anything you’d like me to write about.
