20 Good Reasons Lavender is the Superhero of Essential Oils

Lavender at my local market

Lavender at my local market

The following is an excerpt from my book:

“Lavender – Singularly Spectacular for General Health”

If it all gets a bit too confusing, lavender is here to save the day. It’s the super hero of essential oils and here are 20 good reasons why:

1. It is a herb that has been used for perfumery and healing for centuries and is still thriving.

2. Lavender’s purple colour is related to the upper chakras, mainly the crown chakra which connects us with the universe and all the knowledge contained within its structure.

3. The perfect oil for use in first aid as it has properties of cell regeneration, anti-bacterial and anti-septic constituents. Perfect for cuts, grazes, falls and anytime first aid is required. Even rushing to someone’s aid with a little bottle of lavender can help shock and fright.

4. A great after sun oil and THE one indicated oil to use for any kind of burn.

lovely lavender

5. Great for relaxing and inducing sleep.

6. It is calming and can be used for headaches and as an antidote for sadness and depression.

7. A wonderful tonic for the heart both physically and meta-physically.

8. It has warming and cooling properties and could be considered a balancing oil – an oil of evening things out. I call it the oil of solidarity.

9. Treats insect bites by immediately stopping the itching.

10. It’s easy to find and relatively inexpensive.

11. It’s grown and produced all over the world, each region giving its scent and quality to the oil.

12. Lavender oil can be inhaled as a steam for colds, coughs and sinus infections to relieve the symptoms.

13. It counteracts most kinds of pain – physical an emotional.

14. The herbaceous scent blends well with all other oils and can be used as the main part of a potion to provide a platform for all the other scents to project from.

15. The herb can be used in baking, in jams, in teas and in body products.

16. Children seem to like it – it tends to provide a sense of calm and security. It is also a powerful oil to use with the elderly to instill a sense of safety.

17. The essential oil is perfect for grounding and centering, using in spells and to help stimulate creativity.

18. It is wonderful to use if you need support and encouragement, and either don’t have anyone around to give that to you, or you’ve temporarily exhausted your own supply. Helps you to find the strength to carry on when times are tough.

19. Connects us to the great feminine power of Gaia.

20. One drop is enough to change your perspective from weak to strong.

“Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose.

Rose essential oil is sometimes referred to as Attar of Rose or Rose Otto. It is steam distilled and the most expensive way to buy rose oil. Many other rose oils are actually “absolutes”, which refers to the way in which the scented oil has been extracted. This method is not very natural, often with chemicals used to extract the scented essence.
I’m hoping that one day soon we will start to see more CO2 extracts of rose available, which are more environmentally friendly (even though it doesn’t sound like it), and actually extracts more of the plant or flower than steam distillation does. Check out my article “What are CO2 Extracts in the World of Aromatherapy?” for more info.

On to some recipes.
I will give you some recipes using 3% rose oil and some using pure rose oil. Rose oil is mostly sold already mixed in a 3% ratio with jojoba mainly because of the cost. See my article for more info on 3% blends in jojoba.

10 Recipes with Ginger Essential Oil – Zingiber officinale

10 Recipes with Ginger Essential Oil – Zingiber officinale

Beautiful ginger

Beautiful ginger

To me ginger essential oil is an oil that doesn’t necessarily smell how you think it will – especially if you have eaten eat before, or drunk tea with fresh ginger in it. Like black pepper essential oil, ginger is a spice oil that is a lot more gentle that the plant itself. It is soft and warming, slightly reminiscent of rosemary, with a spicy undertone that can take a few seconds to vapourise.

I’m writing about ginger today because yesterday I had my regular aromatherapy treatment and I was given ginger, orange and, um …. something else (I can’t remember now), and it was gorgeous!

In aromatherapy ginger essential oil is used:

* externally on the stomach for nausea

* as a general warming tonic

* to increase circulation to the extremities (important with people who have diabetes)

I use ginger oil metaphysically to help clients or friends (or myself), particularly when the emotions are stuck and a cold. Ginger is a great way to soften your emotions ans help you to become more approachable in your relationships, and may even help with finding your true purpose in life.

Here are some recipes:

1. Put A few Drops Of Oil into the bottom of the Shower

This works in a similar way to just taking a whiff straight from the bottle, but if you’ve got an extra minute, it will give you a completely different experience. Your whole body will be immersed in an essential oil steam. Just cover the drain with a cloth or your foot for a couple of minutes and breathe in the medicinal goodness

The Tarot and Essential Oils

The Tarot and Essential Oils

I compiled this book from my series on the tarot, and with a little editing for flow, it’s an easy read. I follow the major arcana cards from 0 The Fool, right through to XXI The World. This is a great book for those of you who like to work from recipes as you get to know what each essential oil (and tarot card) is like. It’s also great for more experienced blenders who need a little inspiration.

I promise I don’t send out many letters, I know how annoying it can be receiving lots of subscription emails everyday.

Thanks so much for your continued support!

The leaves and twigs ready to be distilled into petitgrain oil

Ah beautiful, fresh petitgrain. This is one of my favourite oils along with neroli. They are produced from the same tree, but petitgrain comes from the leaves and twigs of the bitter citrus tree, whereas neroli is made from the gentle blossoms.

In my book “Revelation! Reveal Your Destiny with Essential Oils”,  I classify petitgrain as an oil of happiness with the keyword “potentiality”. It has a green citrus and almost spicy scent but is also fresh and clean. It is one of the scents in Eau de Cologne and is used in Aromatherapy as an oil to counteract depression and anxiety.

5 Essential Oils to Help You Love Your Job

5 Essential Oils to Help You Love Your Job

hearts to you

hearts to you for what you do

Believe it or not, some people work in jobs they don’t really like, let alone LOVE.

Are you someone who is discontent with what you do on a daily basis?

Or are you someone who sorta-kinda thinks their job is ok, but really you rather be doing something else?

I’m going to assume we’d all rather be on holidays forever (and that we probably can’t get that happening) and that you do have a job, and you’d like to make the daily grind less of a daily grind. Essential oils won’t be able to go out into the world for you and find the perfect job, but they can help you feel better about yourself and where you are in your life.

orange - it's a great food AND oil!

orange – it’s a great food AND oil!

1.Orange

Orange oil is made from the rind of oranges. It is the perfect oil to help bring a little happiness and sweetness into your life. And just look at that colour! Oranges vibrate with a bright fresh energy, and the oil is all about innocence and simplicity.

Can you find ONE good thing about your job? It can be anything from liking the biscuits they provide to getting your pay.

Put a few drops of orange oil into the bottom of the shower in the morning, cover the drain with your foot or cloth, breathe deeply, smile. Carry this smile with you during the day.

Frankincense resin in it's organic form is then distilled into an essential oil

Frankincense resin in its organic form is then distilled into an essential oil

2. Frankincense

Frankincense is the oil of breathing deeply, which means a less stressful approach to the day and a deeper connection to your spirit. By taking a big whiff of Frankincense before you head out the door in the morning, you reinforce a calm state of mind and of body too.

The more oxygen you can take into your body the better you can cope at work, and the more easily adaptable you will be to problem solving. When your attitude is calm, your day at work will be better and easier to like.

Fresh clean inspiring pine

Fresh clean inspiring pine

3. Pine

Inspirational, fresh and clean, pine essential oil will help you acknowledge others around you and how they can bring positive vibes to your work day. If you are surrounded by people you don’t really understand or like, pine oil is the oil for you. Your job brings you abundance in the form of money – but what other aspects of abundance can you identify at work? Open you mind to find new things you are thankful for in this job. Just try, even if it might be difficult.

Take a drop of pine essential oil on a cotton pad in your pocket. It will remind you to FEEL abundant, and who knows what can happen from this new state of being?

cinnamon

cinnamon

4. Cinnamon

This lively spice oil will sweeten your day. Cinnamon speaks to the our dharma and is the oil for really loving what you do. It may just help you look within to move from a job you dislike to a new position or a new company. Open to your destiny by asking yourself “what do I love?” I know sometimes it’s not easy to actually contemplate changing jobs, especially if other people rely on you and the money it brings, however take a whiff of cinnamon to invoke happiness and perhaps even a little courage. It IS important to love what you do and for right now, just use cinnamon and see what it brings.

Wh!at a gorgeous flower

What a gorgeous flower – Ylang Ylang

5. Ylang Ylang

This amazing flower makes a deep, exotic floral oil, which is great for skin and also for releasing anger and frustration. It’s base note qualities appeal to both men and women and I recommend a drop or two, diluted in some carrier oil, on your wrists and heart. This action will help you draw the divine energy of forgiveness into your heart so when you step into work, your attitude will be a little softer.

Ylang ylang is also an oil of sensuality, and when you’re feeling good about yourself, it makes it easier to feel better about your circumstances.

**** Essential oils won’t cure an illness or be a complete solution to every problem; however they will help you change your focus and in turn look at the world in a different light.

Remember to treat yourself first, then everyone will benefit.

10 Recipes with Jasmine 3 % Essential Oil – Jasminum grandiflorum

A jasmine blossom in Sydney - pic by me

A jasmine blossom in Sydney – pic by me

Jasmine essential oil is stunning. I’m not sure how else to describe its heavenly scent. Jasmine is a sweet little flower with an almighty punch when it is converted into an oil – sweet and heady, syrupy and luscious. I recommend you always have a little bottle of this oil with you to open your energy to the feminine mystique within you.

Why do I say 3%? Jasmine is an expensive oil (yes you can buy it as a 100% pure essential oil), so it is more commonly found already diluted into a 3% ratio in jojoba oil. Aromatherapists usually work on a 2.5% ratio when blending so 3% essential oils are ready to use on your skin. For more info see my article “Essential Oils 3% in Jojoba – What are they, and Why?”.
