Put 1 or 2 drops into the bottom of a bowl. Add boiling water and make a tent with a towel to stick your head in! Breathe through your nose for blocked sinuses and a headache, and through your mouth to help with a cough. Add another drop of oil if necessary.

Eucalyptus is the oil to help clear the nasal passage from congestion, so it’s the perfect oil to use when you have a cold.

Essential Oils for Tony Abbot and the Australian Government

Never have essential oils been so essential. If there was an oil to counteract embarrassment over the ongoing bad decisions of a government, I’m sure about half of the Australian people would use it NOW!

PEACE LOVE HAPPINESS

PEACE LOVE HAPPINESS

Prime Minister Tony Abbot and the Australian Government have many things to be ashamed about, including the latest decision not to allow a party vote on marriage equality. It’s this, the view and treatment of asylum seekers, inequality for our indigenous brothers and sisters, and inaction on climate change and the open policies that support the coal mining industry, that have me utterly embarrassed to be Australian. I used to be proud to be an Aussie, but it’s getting harder by the minute.

So I’ve decided to treat the government with some essential oils to help them understand the part we play in the evolution of humanity. I’d be happy to come to Parliament House and waft a few oils around.

blue

Australian Sandalwood    Santalum spicatum

This beautiful oil has the base of Indian sandalwood with a bit of the Australian bush thrown in. Let’s spiritually connect to this precious land, like the original Australians do, and then we can move forward in our understanding and treatment of Aboriginal Australians in the NOW! Let’s embrace our rich history with better knowledge of the Dreamtime and be proud to share this ancient, powerful land with our indigenous brothers and sisters.

yellow

Frankincense  Boswellia carterii

Long deep breaths. Oxygenate our lungs. PEACE. Quietly connect to our souls and the collective oneness that exists in the fabric of space-time. Start every day in government with a 15 minute meditation and watch Australia and the world change! Frankincense inspires truth.

green

Juniper  Juniperus communis

Release neagtivity. Release bad energy with light fresh juniper. The parliament could do with a good douse of this oil, so we can start again afresh. Dear Government – stop the fear mongering! There are still a lot of people in this country who are easily swayed by fear and will do anything to protect themselves from external evil. Whatever that is at the time – “boat people”, gay people getting married …….. if only they knew the fear agenda was being actively pushed and used as a control system. Being an eternal optimist I see these issues as the last dying gasps of a world wide system of oppression changing for the better. As the 6 Million Dollar Man tv show said “we have the technology”.

violet

(Australian) Desert Rosewood  Eremophilia michelli

Government front benchers need to open their hearts to the plight of displaced people all over the world. Let’s get better infrastructure happening in rural areas to help home asylum seekers fleeing persecution. Can we have a billet system like we did on school trips? How can we get us all involved in solving the issues of the country. Hey let’s build some wind and solar farms to power the country. It’s a no brainer really. Let’s share love not hate and fear. Let’s get some good energy flowing in our heart chakras.

orange 3

Orange  Citrus sinensis

Let’s get a bit of happiness and joy in our lives. Let’s get Australians dancing and happy. Let’s connect to the sweetness of children who are happy, and refrain from taking away Aboriginal children from their families at a rate that is comparable to to the Stolen Generation. Let’s celebrate life and happiness.

red

Rose  Rosa damascena

Love. Love is all. Imagine if we based all our decisions around the rights of everyone in our community to love. It has to be better than hate and separation. If the Australian Government just legalised gay marriage, or marriage equality, then we could all just get on with life. It won’t hurt anybody. In fact it wont really change anything and I think the issue is being used to deflect people’s attention away from the more important things like renewable energy.

I could keep going here, and I do realise this is just a simplistic view, but sometimes the simplest ideas are the best.

10 Recipes with Ginger Essential Oil – Zingiber officinale

Beautiful ginger

Beautiful ginger

To me ginger essential oil is an oil that doesn’t necessarily smell how you think it will – especially if you have eaten eat before, or drunk tea with fresh ginger in it. Like black pepper essential oil, ginger is a spice oil that is a lot more gentle that the plant itself. It is soft and warming, slightly reminiscent of rosemary, with a spicy undertone that can take a few seconds to vapourise.

I’m writing about ginger today because yesterday I had my regular aromatherapy treatment and I was given ginger, orange and, um …. something else (I can’t remember now), and it was gorgeous!

In aromatherapy ginger essential oil is used:

* externally on the stomach for nausea

* as a general warming tonic

* to increase circulation to the extremities (important with people who have diabetes)

I use ginger oil metaphysically to help clients or friends (or myself), particularly when the emotions are stuck and a cold. Ginger is a great way to soften your emotions ans help you to become more approachable in your relationships, and may even help with finding your true purpose in life.

Here are some recipes:

Showing the Autumnal and Spring (or Vernal) equinoxes and the position of the sun -pic via http://www.physicalgeography.net

OOOOOOOO yeah its equinox time! This March Equinox means cooler temperatures for us in the southern hemisphere, and warmer times for you up north. Equatorial people just get a little hint of a change, but this may change in years to come with global temperatures changing and wacky things happening in the atmosphere.

“an equinox occurs when the tilt of the Earth’s axis is neither away or towards the Sun. At this time, the center of the Sun is in the plane of the Earth’s equator. What happens as a result is that the Sun is at one of two opposite points on the celestial sphere. The word equinox is translated in Latin to mean “equal night” because during an equinox the day and night will be at equal length.

The Spring Equinox begins on March 21 and marks the start of the new astrological year in the tropical zodiac since the Sun will enter Aries — the first sign in the zodiac. This is typically a time of new beginnings and we have come to associate the Spring Equinox with a “fresh start.”

tarot.com

But for me it’s the Autumnal Equinox in Aries (the start of the astrological year), and for others it’s the Vernal Equinox in Aries. Hmmmmmm.

So in the Southern hemisphere, the astrological year is starting but we are getting ready for winter. Maybe this means we start thinking about our new plans NOW, and we’ll see them finally hatch at the end of the year (spring and summer).

In the north your new year starts with warmth and fiery Aries energy. Get ready to party.

Which oils can we use the ease us into the next seasons?

Essential oils that help us prepare for cooler weather, bring us down from a hot summer,  and also plant the seeds of ideas that will hatch in spring:

Fennel – be kind to yourself, nurture your body

Mandarin – bring the happiness of summer into autumn, acknowledge the simple things in life

Basil – open the upper chakras to receive divine guidance through the darker months

Pine – give thanks for an abundant summer and the people in our lives who have helped us

Essential oils that help shake off the cold, and spur us into action:

Rosemary – increase circulation, stimulate the mind to remember what we had planned for this new season

Cardamom – get the energy flowing all around and through you

Jasmine – awaken your creativity and sensuality

Geranium – cheer up summer is coming

Essential oils to help change our energy levels and get us moving, stimulate creativity and goal setting:

Frankincense – deep breathing, connection to spirit

Cedarwood Virginian – love what you do in everyday life and help the world evolve through these practices

Petitgrain – fresh new starts, pure potentiality

Juniper – shed old energy patterns and emotions to move forward

It is important to acknowledge and celebrate these planetary occurrences to help us stay connected to our land. Let’s love our planet, take care of it and each other. Let’s evolve – because it’s the only choice that seems relevant.

Using essential oils will help open your spirit through the elusive Limbic System in your brain. The scent of a natural oil can awaken divine intelligence within you, so go ahead and use any essential oil to expand your consciousness. We need you.

Remember to treat yourself first, then everyone will benefit.

The leaves and twigs ready to be distilled into petitgrain oil

Ah beautiful, fresh petitgrain. This is one of my favourite oils along with neroli. They are produced from the same tree, but petitgrain comes from the leaves and twigs of the bitter citrus tree, whereas neroli is made from the gentle blossoms.

In my book “Revelation! Reveal Your Destiny with Essential Oils”,  I classify petitgrain as an oil of happiness with the keyword “potentiality”. It has a green citrus and almost spicy scent but is also fresh and clean. It is one of the scents in Eau de Cologne and is used in Aromatherapy as an oil to counteract depression and anxiety.

5 Essential Oils to Help You Love Your Job

hearts to you

hearts to you for what you do

Believe it or not, some people work in jobs they don’t really like, let alone LOVE.

Are you someone who is discontent with what you do on a daily basis?

Or are you someone who sorta-kinda thinks their job is ok, but really you rather be doing something else?

I’m going to assume we’d all rather be on holidays forever (and that we probably can’t get that happening) and that you do have a job, and you’d like to make the daily grind less of a daily grind. Essential oils won’t be able to go out into the world for you and find the perfect job, but they can help you feel better about yourself and where you are in your life.

orange - it's a great food AND oil!

orange – it’s a great food AND oil!

1.Orange

Orange oil is made from the rind of oranges. It is the perfect oil to help bring a little happiness and sweetness into your life. And just look at that colour! Oranges vibrate with a bright fresh energy, and the oil is all about innocence and simplicity.

Can you find ONE good thing about your job? It can be anything from liking the biscuits they provide to getting your pay.

Put a few drops of orange oil into the bottom of the shower in the morning, cover the drain with your foot or cloth, breathe deeply, smile. Carry this smile with you during the day.

Frankincense resin in it's organic form is then distilled into an essential oil

2. Frankincense

Frankincense is the oil of breathing deeply, which means a less stressful approach to the day and a deeper connection to your spirit. By taking a big whiff of Frankincense before you head out the door in the morning, you reinforce a calm state of mind and of body too.

The more oxygen you can take into your body the better you can cope at work, and the more easily adaptable you will be to problem solving. When your attitude is calm, your day at work will be better and easier to like.

Fresh clean inspiring pine

3. Pine

Inspirational, fresh and clean, pine essential oil will help you acknowledge others around you and how they can bring positive vibes to your work day. If you are surrounded by people you don’t really understand or like, pine oil is the oil for you. Your job brings you abundance in the form of money – but what other aspects of abundance can you identify at work? Open you mind to find new things you are thankful for in this job. Just try, even if it might be difficult.

Take a drop of pine essential oil on a cotton pad in your pocket. It will remind you to FEEL abundant, and who knows what can happen from this new state of being?

cinnamon

cinnamon

4. Cinnamon

This lively spice oil will sweeten your day. Cinnamon speaks to the our dharma and is the oil for really loving what you do. It may just help you look within to move from a job you dislike to a new position or a new company. Open to your destiny by asking yourself “what do I love?” I know sometimes it’s not easy to actually contemplate changing jobs, especially if other people rely on you and the money it brings, however take a whiff of cinnamon to invoke happiness and perhaps even a little courage. It IS important to love what you do and for right now, just use cinnamon and see what it brings.

Wh!at a gorgeous flower

What a gorgeous flower – Ylang Ylang

5. Ylang Ylang

This amazing flower makes a deep, exotic floral oil, which is great for skin and also for releasing anger and frustration. It’s base note qualities appeal to both men and women and I recommend a drop or two, diluted in some carrier oil, on your wrists and heart. This action will help you draw the divine energy of forgiveness into your heart so when you step into work, your attitude will be a little softer.

Ylang ylang is also an oil of sensuality, and when you’re feeling good about yourself, it makes it easier to feel better about your circumstances.

**** Essential oils won’t cure an illness or be a complete solution to every problem; however they will help you change your focus and in turn look at the world in a different light.

Remember to treat yourself first, then everyone will benefit.

An Essential Oil Guide to Minimising Stress and Freak-Outs

An Essential Oil Guide to Minimising Stress and Freak-Outs

If you are feeling stressed, anxious, or unable to cope as well as you usually do, then essential oils may help you. It is worth noting though, that if you are stressed, it can be really difficult to garner the energy to help yourself – even just a little bit.

In this case I still definitely recommend the use of essential oils, as their healing power is unstoppable, so to invite you to heal yourself, it’s best to use the easy methods which are:

Take a huge whiff to change your focus in seconds - but don't overdo it!

Take a huge whiff to change your focus in seconds – but don’t overdo it!

1. Open The Bottle and Take a Huge Whiff

Self explanatory and easy! This may be enough to change your focus (even slightly), and hopefully help you to feel a bit better about things. This method is especially good if you are really freaking out.

2. Put A few Drops Of Oil into the bottom of the Shower

This works in a similar way to just taking a whiff straight from the bottle, but if you’ve got an extra minute, it will give you a completely different experience. Your whole body will be immersed in an essential oil steam. Energetically this will cleanse your aura and have a positive effect on your mind and emotions. Just cover the drain with a cloth or your foot for a couple of minutes, and breathe in the medicinal goodness.

3. Sample

Put a couple of drops onto a scarf, handkerchief or cotton pad and take it with you, or tuck it into your pocket, or your bra. The scent of the oil will help support you through the day, people will comment on how lovely the scent is (then you’ll feel slightly better about life in general), the energetic presence of the oil will bring a sense of calm, and it’s really easy too!

A little kindness goes a long way

A little kindness goes a long way

If you can help a friend or a partner who is stressing or freaking out, you could employ these methods which are easy for you, but could be monumentally hard for your friend at a time of stress and unrest.

1. Nourishing body oil blend

Usually I say “For a coat of your body use 3 teaspoons of carrier oil in a little dish and, add 7 – 8 drops of essential oil. It’s always best to patch test first, before you apply all over.” But you could make this little blend and massage someone’s hands or feet to help them chill out.

***** Always put the drops of essential oil into the bottle or dish first, then add the carrier oil. It gives the scents time to create a synergistic fusion.

For a 50ml bottle of oil add 25 drops and see my articles “Ratios for Blending Essential Oils – A Reminder of the Basics” and “Aromatherapy – It’s Easy as 1 2 3”

2. Scent Their Space

Use 25 drops of oil In a traditional oil burner with a candle, or a diffuser, in your friend’s personal space to help them feel more comfortable. It is easy for you, but could be too much for them at this moment.

A drop of oil can be essential

A drop of oil can be essential

Which oils?

Rose – Queen of oils to help with all stress issues

Frankincense – breathe deeply and relax

Lavender – calm, solidarity and strength

Bergamot – calm, relieve mild anxiety

Marjoram – grief, emotional pain relief

Vetiver – absolute grounding, cooling to the hot emotions, stops kid’s tantrums

The chamomiles – calming, soothing, medicinal

Lemon – gentle, refreshing

Geranium – cheery, helps improve downward spiraling moods

Cinnamon – sweetness, love what you do for work

Fennel – be kind to yourself

Rosewood – flow of love in the heart centre

Ylang Ylang – release anger and frustation

…. and really, any oil that you love and can help you (or your friend) out.

hearts to you

Kyphi is an incense or perfume made by Egyptian priests to honour the Gods. Here’s an exerpt from my book, Revelation! Reveal Your Destiny with Essential Oils;

“Kyphi has always fascinated me. Even the word makes my heart skip a beat. The word Kyphi is understood as the Greek interpretation of the Egyptian term kp.t. This is a holy incense created by the priests of Egypt – at least a few hundred years before the common era (BCE or BC), but possibly up to 4000 years ago.

Lists of ingredients were found in inscriptions at the Temples of Edfu and Dendera on the West Bank of the Nile in Upper Egypt. Even so, many different variations on the recipe of this sacred perfume are claimed to exist but most agree that the common ingredients were honey, raisins and wine. Some say it was made of 16 ingredients and others claim up to 36.

Honey, raisin, wine, cinnamon and/or cassia, frankincense, myrrh, juniper, cedarwood, cyperus root and sweet flag, mastic, amber, benzoin and labdanum (gums and resins), aspalathos, camel grass, mint and others may have contributed to it’s magical nature.

Plutach the Greek historian, biographer and essayist wrote about the preparation of Kyphi stating:

“these are compounded, not at random, but while sacred  writingsare being read to the perfumers as they mix the ingredients”.

Mortar and pestle - so alchemical!

Mortar and pestle – so alchemical !

The priest held the intention of the prayers and sacred poems in their entire being as the perfume was mixed. This illustrates the power of intention at work in its finest form. The incense preparation was used as a temple offereingto the Gods so it was necessary to make it in a holy space with a complete energy of divinity. As the incense was burnt in the evening, the message to the Gods was pure.”

The use of the ingredients of Kyphi was methodical

The use of the ingredients of Kyphi was methodical

I love that it was a very methodical procedure. When I make body oils or perfumes, and I’m using a standard recipe it is very important to me to make sure I add the oils in the same order they have been listed in on the recipe. It doesn’t seem like it would make a difference but it does!

When I first started studying aromatherapy my teacher had us all make the same body oil. Of course we all added the drops of the varying oils at different times, and guess what … yep each oil actually smelled different.

And you can understand why I always talk about intention when you are blending – even if you are just chucking oils into a vapouriser, have good thoughts, it will make a difference.

We’ve covered the first 6 days of Christmas so strap yourself in for the last 6 days! And I’ve just realised that I haven’t used the classic Christmas oils of frankincense and myrrh. As with part one I’ve taken each verse and created an oil blend for you to scent your home. To scent you own space I recommend 25 drops of essential oil, and you can use a traditional oil burner with a candle, an electric vapouriser, or for a quick and easy result put 25 drops of oil into a bowl and pour boiling water over it and leave it to stand – instant aromatherapy!

The song continues …..

7. On the seventh day of Christmas my true love gave to me seven swans-a-swimming serenely in a lake. I’ve always imagined the swans to be black, regal, beautiful.

Ok this is where it gets tricky. Some versions say its 9 drummers drumming, others say its 9 ladies dancing so I’m going to go with the majority of all the English versions and say it’s the drummers. Most of the American versions seem to have the drummers up last but it makes sense because the drummers are starting to call the tribe to dance. From verses 9 – 12 it’s all quite different. My Mum also thought it was 9 drummers drumming but my Dad didn’t know. As Janet Jackson says in Nasty Boys – “Give me a beat”. The party has started!

Wikipedia says

The gifts associated with the final four days are often reordered. Most often, this involves placing the ladies and lords earlier (on days nine and ten), and the musicians later (on days eleven and twelve).

So I reckon the music must come first!

10. And now that the drummers have given us a beat, come in pipers! (Even though the American version says it’s 11 pipers piping, I’m sticking with the English version).

12. And once again it could be 10 lords that are leaping, but I’m going with 12 this time around. At any rate – let them leap! Let’s all leap into a wonderful end of year celebration, so whether you’re into Christmas or not, please be thankful for this interesting life. Bring on 2014 (sounds SO futuristic).
